Turbine Ventilator
Alternative on Earth Friendly Cooling System
Indonesia is hot. Many other countries are hot. Some has 24/7 hot tropical climate, while others are unbearable during summer. But have you ever been to Indonesia’s rural areas where none of the villagers use air conditioner ? It’s not that hot actually, totally acceptable.
How come?
Have you ever thought this? Because nobody is using air conditioner there 😆
It is pretty simple actually. AC cools your room down, but it emits hot air outside as the result. Now imagine if all houses turn on AC, added with all vehicles on the street use AC, and all buildings in Jakarta use AC during busy day in Jakarta. And then we complain “Jakarta is Hot eh?”. And no wonder if by 2050 it is predicted that the world will be very very hot. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/07/major-us-cities-will-face-unprecedente-climates-2050/
Side Story
My wife and I have one major common characteristic. For example, we both don’t like people throwing garbage not in the right place. Basically we have concern in all things bad for health and environment.
First time we moved to this house, it is noticeably hot. All of our neighbors use AC in their houses, only us don’t. We use fans in our rooms. Someday my wife gave a crazy idea — she wants us to install turbine ventilator, like an exhaust fan, but without electricity, and is widely used for factory industries and for ware houses. Here how it looks like:
I was skeptical at first. I was thinking whether it will be effective. Will the fans rotate? And whether it will actually reduce heat from inside our house. After few months of trying to persuade me, she won. Still with skeptical feelings, we installed 2 units. One is on top of our kitchen. The other one is on top of my son’s learning/ playing area.
This is how it looks like from below.
It uses Bernoulli’s Principal to suck our hot air from inside, and works better with the help of external wind. However, when I wrote this article, it is during daylight, and hot outside, I don’t notice any wind outside, and it is rotating.
After installing them, we actually feel significant differences in temperature, simply if we compare with sitting on terrace area outside the door.
Q: what if it is raining?
No water drops. I don’t know the reason behind, I am never good in physics study 😆 but yeah, it does not leak water. Otherwise, all of the factories and warehouses around the world would have been flooded.
It has been around 7 years I guess and it is still doing its job.
Q: My children can’t sleep without AC
That’s strange… because our children can sleep normally without AC. Ah yes, of course, that is probably because you have been accustoming your kids with AC since they were babies. Right now the normal acceptable level for them is probably “cold room”, and no longer “normal room temperature without AC”.
Q: So should I stop using air conditioner in my house and change to fans and turbine ventilator ?
I don’t know, it is your right and your heart call. We just want to inform you alternative solution if you live in tropical climate, that perhaps can delay or prevent living hell in the world for our kids’ and grand kids future. We totally won’t be able to change people mindset if they still think “ — as long as I am comfortable”.
Q: I am interested in using turbine ventilator, where can I buy?
It should be available globally, just check your favorite online store. For Indonesia, you may refer to Tokopedia: https://www.tokopedia.com/search?st=product&q=turbine%20ventilator
