Movie Review: Doc Martin (2004-)

Doc Martin is a TV Series which first series aired on September 2004. Until recent 2019 it has been producing nine seasons and the director confirmed, final 10th season is coming.

Martine Clunes is playing the main protagonist character, dr. Martin Ellingham, a grumpy doctor who moved from London, into out-of -nowhere small village, called Portwenn in UK.

The settings of the movie is very unique — oldies. Although it was released in 2004, to me it looks like a movie which was produced in 90s. I am not able to find more information whether this is intended or not. Or is it in reality how it looks like in UK villages at that time.

Doc Martin (this is how the villagers call him, in which, the Doc does not like it very much 😃) develops phobia to blood while working as surgeon in London. This forces him to move out and leave his job without anybody noticing the quirk.

His very serious, insensitive and righteous personality, do not really match the culture of Portwenn village, which is “relaxed”, very informal, and holding high each other’s feeling on top of everything else — brings many conflicts between them. Doc Martin, with his outstanding knowledge will defend his position as “this is the right way to do”. While the villagers, they do not know the formal rules nor know the correct procedure on the issues and diseases, think that Doc Martin will not last long in Portwenn.

What I like most from Doc Martin, despite of his stubbornness, he is willing to sacrifice everything to help the villagers in need, including his new love life, which he has been struggling to have. If I were him, of course I would chose my lover on top of everything — I am not a superhero after all 😏

Actually many conflicts in this movie can be solved easily if

• everybody tries to open their eyes on different point of view and other’s opinion,
• not afraid to try something new and to express what you think. More honest to each other. People tend to make excuses and lies to cover what they think is right,
• communication is the key. Try to ensure that our partner gets the correct message of we are trying to deliver, and put our assumption off. If needed, over-communication is better than a missed one.

But hey, without conflicts the movie wont last many seasons 😄 and the fact that Doc Martin is going to have 10 seasons just means that the movie is very good and received great perception from the public.
